Low Petergate to remain closed to traffic for another 6 months

In October a structural issue was discovered at 71 Low Petergate, following some rendering falling off the front elevation into the highway.

A structural engineer was concerned about the structural stability of the building due to long standing timber rot and potential for infill Stonework between the timber frame to become detached.

The required investigation and maintenance work to make the building safe could only be undertaken once scaffolding was put in place to support the building, this required an emergency closure, as insufficient carriageway width would be available.
The York Council now says that the investigation work has been undertaken and the required works identified is significant. The contractor has requested an extension of the closure for 6 months to allow time for the works to be undertaken with the support scaffold in place.
