Night-time closure for resurfacing work on part of the A1237 northern by pass

City of York Council will be carrying out resurfacing works between the A1036 Malton Road, A1237 Outer ring road and Hopgrove Lane roundabouts.

Work will start on Tuesday 18 June and last until Wednesday 3 July 2024, weather permitting, and will take place between 9.00pm and 5.00am on weekdays.

From Tuesday 18 June to Friday 21 June inclusive, the work will be undertaken using lane closures only, so access will still be possible through the works.

From Tuesday 25 June to Wednesday 3 July inclusive (except the weekend) a full road closure will be in place on weekday evenings between 9.00pm and 5.00am when work is taking place.

The Little Hopgrove roundabout will be completely closed and there will be no access to the A1237 outer ring road or the A1036 Malton Road from the A64.

Diversions will be in place, however the road will be open when work isn’t happening, including during the daytime and at weekends.

Weekend work is not expected to be necessary and no work is planned to take place on Monday 24 June, meaning the road will be open during these days.

Road closures for resurfacing works in Bishopthorpe Road and Elvington Lane – UPDATE

Update 7th June 2024

There have been changes to the times of resurfacing works on Bishopthorpe Road that will require road closures this June.

Due to the poor condition of the underlying carriageway, we will be closing Bishopthorpe Road to vehicle traffic on Thursday 6 June and Friday 7 June (6.30pm-Midnight). This will be instead of the closures originally planned on the 16-19 June.

We apologise for any inconvenience this unexpected change to the scheduled roadworks may cause; residents have been informed.

Pedestrian and cyclist routes will be maintained, where possible, to allow access to properties and homes safely.

Roadworks on Elvington Lane (B1228) continue as planned until Tuesday 11 June (7pm-6am), weather permitting.

All works are being carried out by ‘Lane Rental Services Ltd’, working on behalf of the Council.

Delays are expected, so please plan ahead when making any journeys in the area during the works. Emergency services will always be permitted access during the closures.

Bus diversions are expected on after 6.30pm. These will include the York-bound Number 11 service via Knavesmire Road and the Number 26 service via Balmoral Terr.

Road closure waring on Askham Lane

Nearby, there is more evidence of the Council’s failure to ensure that vegetation is strimmed back from street furniture.

The Council decided to suspend using weed killer to maintain essential safety sight lines, but doesn’t seem to have put an effective trimmng regime in place as an alternative.

A1237 essential bridge maintenance works

City of York Council will be carrying out essential maintenance works to bridges on the A1237, from Monday 22 May.

Works will be carried out on the Rawcliffe Ings Bridge (over the River Ouse) and Millfield Railway Bridge (over the East Coast Main Line). The works will not impact railway services.

To help ease traffic flow, works will take place at night, between 9pm and 6am, working 7 days a week over a five-week period. Weather permitting the scheme will be completed by Friday 30 June 2023.

To help further ease traffic, and in order to carry out the work safely, the scheme will be split into four phases so that the single lane closure will only be in place on shorter sections of the carriageway at a time.

Work will be carried out under temporary traffic signals to minimise disruption and marshalls will be on-site during the works to assist pedestrians and cyclists.

During the day, provisions will be put in place to ensure the road is fully reopened (but covered by ramps to protect the surface). For safety reasons the speed limit will be reduced to 30mph from each roundabout for the full duration of the work.

The £200k refurbishment, funded by the annual structures allocated highways budget, will include resurfacing sections of the bridge and drainage replacement. It will ensure that the structure of the bridge will be better protected.

Emergency services, cyclists and pedestrians will permitted through the works at all times.

As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience to the public. However, everything will be done to keep this to a minimum.

The council remains committed to an improved bridge crossing on the A1237 for both pedestrians and cyclists forms part of the scheme that the council has lodged with the Department for Transport.

Plan Ahead

These works form part of significant investment in the city over the next 10 years, including developments to build new homes and attract more well-paid jobs to the city.

For York’s transport network, this means work to achieve:

  • Improvements and changes to roads, footpaths and cycle ways
  • developments to build new homes and attract more well-paid jobs to the city
  • more increased safety measures in York City centre

Residents and visitors are urged to plan ahead in advance, which could help to reduce time spent in traffic.

Low Petergate to remain closed to traffic for another 6 months

In October a structural issue was discovered at 71 Low Petergate, following some rendering falling off the front elevation into the highway.

A structural engineer was concerned about the structural stability of the building due to long standing timber rot and potential for infill Stonework between the timber frame to become detached.

The required investigation and maintenance work to make the building safe could only be undertaken once scaffolding was put in place to support the building, this required an emergency closure, as insufficient carriageway width would be available.
The York Council now says that the investigation work has been undertaken and the required works identified is significant. The contractor has requested an extension of the closure for 6 months to allow time for the works to be undertaken with the support scaffold in place.

National Highways is set to carry out essential maintenance on the A64 between Barr Lane and Claxton as well as part of Scotchman Lane.

The maintenance work will see both carriageways resurfaced, new road markings painted, road studs replaced, and drainage work.

The A64 will be closed in both directions between York and Malton for an entire month with work starting on Monday November 1 and is due to be completed in early December, weather permitting.

Drivers are advised to plan their route and allow for extra travel time as a 58-mile diversion will be in place, which has been agreed with police and North Yorkshire County Council, and will increase travel times by up to one hour and 30 minutes.

The official diversion route takes drivers heading west towards York off the A64 at Malton along the A169 to Pickering, along the A170 to Thirsk before joining the A19 south to York.

The road will be closed overnight from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.

Richard Burgess, National Highways’ Project Manager, said: “This work is essential to keep the A64 in a safe, smooth condition for drivers.

“For the safety of roadworkers and the public, we’ll need to close the A64 in both directions between Barr Lane to Claxton overnight from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.  A fully signed diversion via the A169 and A170 will be in place which has been agreed in advance with the police and local authority.

“The diversion route has been planned to consider the needs of local communities and will extend journey times considerably so we’re advising road users to allow more time and plan their journeys in advance.”
